Pragya Prasun Singh is a courageous Indian activist, acid attack survivor, and the founder of the Atijeevan Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting burn and acid attack survivors across India. Born around 1983 in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, and raised in Varanasi, Pragya’s life took a tragic turn just twelve days after her marriage in 2006, when a spurned suitor attacked her with acid while she was asleep on a train to New Delhi. She suffered 47% burns and endured nine painful reconstructive surgeries, but refused to let the attack define her life.
Instead, she transformed her trauma into purpose. In 2013, she established the Atijeevan Foundation to provide holistic support for survivors — including funding for medical treatment, psychological counselling, vocational training, and legal advocacy. Under her leadership, the foundation has supported over 950 survivors and facilitated more than 300 surgeries across cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, and Mumbai.
In recognition of her tireless efforts and empowering impact, Pragya Prasun Singh was awarded the prestigious Nari Shakti Puraskar by the President of India in 2019 — the country’s highest civilian honor for women’s empowerment. Beyond her foundation, she is also a mother of two and an entrepreneur, running her own catering business. Pragya continues to inspire countless others by proving that resilience, dignity, and hope can rise even from the deepest scars.
